About the event
Attention! This Friday, March 25th, at noon, Fridays For Future and Last Stand West Kootenay are inviting you to participate in an international climate strike. The objective is to call out our governments and raise to light the need for immediate climate action. There will be speakers starting at noon and a march at 2. Music and dancing will happen afterwards, around 5, for a chance to interact and build community.
We will be focusing on specific issues that are highly relevant and connected both to the climate and our local biosphere. We are standing against the brutal wolf cull implemented by the BC NDP, which is currently being employed “to save caribou” as a scapegoat for the continual destruction of the caribou’s critical habitat, old growth forests. Clear cutting of old growth carbon sinks is killing caribou food and home, and the highly sensitive creature is suffering for it. Meanwhile, roads punched through provide corridors for predators to run through, straight at these animals. The solution is not to kill the predators, which are important to a healthy ecosystem, but to stop destroying their habitat.
We also stand for the end of heavy reliance on fossil fuels and natural gas which are increasing greenhouse gas emissions and a great contributor to the climate catastrophe.
We have faced scorching heatwaves, destructive wildfires, and suffocating smoke, that have left hundreds of us dead. Floodwaters and rain have washed away our infrastructure as if they were sand castles in high tide. The global south has experienced disaster after disaster that is fuelled by the greed of first world corporations and government. Industrial extractivism has tarnished and forced its way through beautiful sovereign unceded Indigenous Territory. It’s time to say enough.
Join us at Nelson City Hall at noon, and be ready to march at 2pm. Bring signs, noisemakers, water bottles, passion, and openness.
Together we are unstoppable. Another world is possible.
This event is happening on unceded Sinixt territory with consent.
