About the event
Looking for some inspiration on how to make your home more comfortable and healthy to live in? The Climate Friendly Homes Tour is a unique opportunity to explore local climate friendly and energy efficient homes. You will be able to engage with experts and homeowners who have successfully implemented sustainable living practices.
The Climate Friendly Homes Tour will take place on October 14 from 11:00am to 2:00pm in Nelson and area. Participants will have the chance to visit a carefully curated selection of homes that showcase climate friendly features and energy efficient design elements. The tour, which is being organized by the Community Energy Association, will provide invaluable insights into the possibilities of climate friendly living.
Expect to see homes ranging from renovated properties to newly constructed residences, all designed to minimize the environmental impact related to running the home. Learn about heat pumps, high efficiency building envelopes and renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.
The City of Nelson has declared ambitious climate targets: 75% emission reduction by 2030, net zero by 2040. Nelson’s climate pollution from buildings represents 28% of these emissions and is mostly from natural gas heating.
“Supporting residents to get homes off natural gas is key to meeting these targets. Nelson has a great energy retrofit program and has taken some steps towards a zero carbon step code,” according to Judy O’Leary, West Kootenay Climate Hub. “To meet the targets that Council approved, the City will have to wholeheartedly embrace both electrification and energy efficiency. A number of homes on this tour help show how this can be done.”
Tours are also happening in eight other Kootenay communities like Rossland, Creston, and Kimberley. East and West Kootenay Climate Hubs have been helping to coordinate with homeowners.
